As an experienced and visionary teacher, your joy and ultimate goal is to produce students who are capable of not just grasping knowledge, but also defending such knowledge when they get outside the four walls of the classroom. Sometimes, this could pose a great challenge due to the fact that your typical classroom (whether online or physical) is a combination of different types of students with unique learning abilities.
To achieve an all-round effectiveness and have a definite lasting impact on the educational journey of each and every student, the following decisions are indispensable for your teaching career if only you want to be successful in practice.
Affirm these point headings aloud, before reading the explanations beneath them;
TO THE WEAK ONES, I WILL BE PATIENT AND EMPATHETIC
You must have discovered over time that while some of your students perform well in class, some other students perform poorly due to lack of proper understanding of the concept. At this point, some other teachers become very aggressive to the student. However, that doesn’t improve anything. Rather, it further toughens the student and dissolves the little pinch of willingness in such student. As a good teacher, it is very important that you exercise patience and empathy towards your weak students. This year, cultivate the habit of connecting more with your weak students, let them know you care about them and ask them why they aren’t performing at their best. By doing this, you can be able to develop a better approach to help boost the performance of such students.
TO THE LAZY ONES, I WILL BE INTERESTING
Most students who are tagged as -lazy actually have good brains. Remember, it takes intelligence to be good at play as well. The only challenge is the fact that they enjoy much play over academic work. For students who fall into this category, it is important to make your teachings more fun and exciting. You can creatively turn certain concepts into songs and use interesting instances that they are very familiar with, to explain certain concepts that appear complex. You can also adopt the use of visual aids such as pictures and videos to drive home your point. This will definitely captivate your students and make them look forward always to your teaching periods.
TO THE TIRED ONES, I WILL BE MOTIVATING
At moments when you notice your students exhibiting some apathy towards work, either through their words or actions, don’t hesitate to cheer them up and make them understand why education is important to their future. It’s very common these days to find students who are very talented and have passion for other activities they feel do not really require education to actualize them. However, it is important to let them understand and appreciate the higher advantage they will have above those who chased their cravings at the expense of education. Also, ensure you include transformational approaches in your teachings. Migrate from that rigid and conventional method to something more flexible, real, and practical.
TO THE HARDWORKING ONES, I WILL BE ENCOURAGING
You were probably thinking you don’t have any obligation towards hardworking students because they seem to have good grades and are on top of their game. However, the responsibility falls on you to help them maintain the good grades. You should ensure they don’t relent in their effort by commending and compensating them where necessary. Nevertheless, you should be careful of preferential treatment as this could intimidate and discourage other students from pulling their weight academically.
AT EVERY MOMENT, I WILL STAY COMMITTED
Have you heard about teachers who use the best part of the teaching period for their own personal activities or business, especially when there are no traces of supervision? As a teacher who has the interest and success of your students in mind, it is important you do not deprive your students of the quality time needed to impact necessary knowledge and skills into them. Your proper time investment into the education of your students will do them a great deal of advantage which includes better results.
I WILL ALWAYS SEEK TO EXPAND AND UPDATE MY KNOWLEDGE
Certainly, while preparing your lesson note, you must have come across instances where certain words or terms have been considered obsolete (archaic). You must always ensure that you’re current with the trending and correct concepts. This is because education is a dynamic process. It is a system that is open to changes and adjustments. Since most students dwell majorly on the lessons taught by you, then you cannot avoid expanding and updating your knowledge, otherwise, your students will lag behind.
You must also be willing to learn more about great techniques that will help to improve the extent you can go in helping your students become better on their academics.
